The Ch\u00e2teau de l\u2019Hermine, a must-see historical landmark in the town of Vannes<\/h2>\n\n

The residence of the Dukes of Brittany \u2013 well worth a visit during your stay in Southern Brittany<\/h3>\n\n

Old fortified castle<\/strong>\u00a0and integrated into the ramparts of the\u00a0Morbihan prefecture<\/strong>the\u00a0Dukes of Brittany<\/strong>\u00a0lived in this castle until the middle of the 15th century.\u00a0Fran\u00e7ois I of France<\/strong>\u00a0stayed here, particularly in 1532, when the States voted for the union of the duchy.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n

The fortifications subsequently lost much of their usefulness,\u00a0Louis XIV<\/strong>\u00a0In 1670, he decided to sell them off segment by segment to finance his wars. He donated the\u00a0ch\u00e2teau de l'Hermine<\/strong>then in ruins, to the\u00a0city of Vannes<\/strong>\u00a0in 1697, who used it to improve the port and maintain other buildings in the town.<\/p>\n

Protecting Vannes\u2019 heritage<\/h3>\n\n

In 1876, the State acquired the building and the 11th Army Corps Artillery School moved in. The building underwent alterations: an attic was added and the interior was refurbished. The fortified walls gradually fell into disrepair as urban development progressed. It was not until 1911 that an association dedicated to preserving Vannes\u2019s heritage was established, and that\u00a0the ramparts of Vannes<\/strong>\u00a0are put under protection, then\u00a0classified\u00a0Historical Monuments<\/a><\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

During the 20th century, the building, still known as Ch\u00e2teau de l'Hermine, was used for a variety of administrative purposes. In 1976, it became the property of the\u00a0city of Vannes<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Waiting to be restored and given a new lease of life, the\u00a0temporary exhibitions<\/strong>\u00a0occupy the ground floor. The castle is gradually being emptied so that the town can undertake renovation and restoration work.<\/p>\n\n
