A must-see historical monument in Vannes

The Saint-Vincent gate is one of the monuments of Vannes classified as Historical Monument, and this since 1928.

This gate was created between the end of the 16th century and the beginning of the 17th century. It is a city gate, it is the main entrance to the old town of Vannes in Morbihan.

Integrated into the ramparts of Vannes, the gate is located north of the port and Place Gambetta. Originally, it allowed access to the walled city to the speakers of the port.

For about two centuries, access to the gate was via a bridge, itself named Saint-Vincent. It was replaced by a semi-hemispheric square: the Place du Morbihan, now known as Place Gambetta.

The architecture of the Saint-Vincent gate

The Saint-Vincent gate is made of granite ashlar. It is of the baroque style and has 3 bays framed by columns and 3 levels.

The gate was designed by Jean Bugeau, a Breton architect from Rennes. This work is composed of a cart door (allowing the passage of carts) and a postern (small door integrated into the ramparts) controlled by drawbridges. The structure, very weakened, presents serious disorders from the beginning of the XVIIIth century.

In 1747, the engineer Duchemin completely revised the construction. He chose a decorative style inspired by the Italian Baroque.

In the last level (at the very top), a statue of Saint Vincent Ferrier had been installed since 1624. It was damaged during the Revolution and replaced in 1891. At the same date, the coat of arms of the city of Vannes was affixed to the façade.
