La Saint-Vincent gate is one of monuments in Vannes classified as a Historic Monument since 1928.

This gate was created between the end of the XVIe century and the beginning of the XVIIe century. It is a city gate and the main entrance to the town. Vannes old town in Morbihan.

Integrated into ramparts of VannesThe gateway is located to the north of the port and Place Gambetta. Originally, it provided access to the walled city for those working in the port.

For around two centuries, access to the gateway was via a bridge, itself named Saint-Vincent. This was replaced by a semi-hemispherical square: Place du Morbihan, now known as Place Gambetta.

 

The architecture of the Porte Saint-Vincent

      La Saint-Vincent gate is made of granite ashlar. It is Baroque in style, with 3 bays framed by columns and 3 storeys.

The gate was designed by Jean Bugeau, a Breton architect from Rennes. The gate consists of a carriage gate (allowing carts to pass through) and a postern (a small gate built into the ramparts) controlled by drawbridges. The structure, which was very weak, was in serious disrepair from the beginning of the 18th century.e century.

Due to the passage of the Tour de France Women, access to our hotel will be disrupted. Friday 25 July in the evening and Saturday 26 July from 3pm to 6pm.


The road in front of the hotel will be closed and access to the car park can be limited or impossible.
